Mango Martini

Mr Hubby and I really likes mango martinis, so in preparation for Fathers Day we purchases 3 champaign-mangoes (in season now, also known as sweet mangoes). We then skinned and pitted them and then sliced them into wedges. We plopped them in a cracker jar and poured in 2- 5ths of Vodka. Let them soak in the fridge for about 2 weeks to get all that sweetness out of the mangoes.
Serve chilled in a chilled martini glass. You can sugar the rim or add a tiny splash of Triple Sec to sweeten it a bit more if you need to. Add a piece if mango on a cocktail pick as garnish.

Chalkboard Lampshade

http://www.essenze.co.nz
My husband and I made lampshades for a couple of lamps that we found at Goodwill a few years ago. We used the bamboo veneer that we sell. They are so cool! I will snap a shot of them later. My kid is asleep in our bed right now.
We bought the wire rings and self sticking backing paper (safety first!) online. I have seen shades at thrift stores that I thought would be great for transforming as well. The trick to a modern lampshade is that it is cylindrical. The top ring and the bottom ring should be the same circumference.
I like this chalkboard shade alot. I think it would be a great little craft room lamp or kids room lamp. Or even in a modern country kitchen. Or as a pendant lamp over your kitchen island or craft area!
I purchased a few yards of chalkboard fabric from Tall Mouse a few months ago (maybe a year ;) Lookit- I come up on the Google search for chalkboard fabric! I think I may have to chalk-it-up somewhere soon.

update- here is our lamp. Pretty huh?

I also really like this lamp.

kirtsy!
Ok, ok, I just joined Kirtsy. I hesitated to do so because I sign up to so many sites and never seem to use them, but Kirtsy seems like a huge pool of information that I seem to keep coming back to. You can see my profile here.
Speaking of unused profiles- a few months ago I opened a Ning network. Does anyone use Ning? Is anyone interested in a Fancy Schmancy network?

Galaxy Tealight

At $14.95 from Z Gallerie you can't go wrong with this super cool candle holder, but couldn't you just see yourself whipping one up yourself? Tea lights usually come in there own little tin. Also a great use for used chopsticks and a great way to use that last little bit of spray paint from your last project.

I'm sailing away,

Set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life thats ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
Well search for tomorrow on every shore
And Ill try, oh lord, Ill try to carry on
(do you have eric cartman in your head now?)

I was snooping around at sail umbrella shades. We just moved our patio furniture around to make room for a new toddler pool for my Salamander to soak in whilst I compute all day from the nearby doorway. Our new problem now is that the satee now sits just below the Hass avocado tree where on any given day during the tree's peak, at least 5 avocados drop to that exact spot. We need something to soften the blow and a plain ole market umbrella seems boring. I remembered the sail shades that I had run across a few years ago and just discovered that now you can buy just the hardware so that you can make your own. I love that concept! I can totally find my own fabric for a lot less than what it would cost to purchase outright.

Ghetto Style

I think all of these ideas would make for a great little white trash shin-dig. I really like these porcelain plates from Show. I would also use them at Thanksgiving or some other special holiday where your mother-in-law will be at just to make her cringe.
This hanger chandelier is so ghetto and so diy-able along with the ants on the tablecloth. I found this ant rubber stamp that would do the trick.
I spotted this bulb vase over at Craftster. You could splurge by adding real flowers but I think dandelions would be the perfect touch.

Could it be Saten?

I read that using a satin pillowcase at night prevents tangles in your hair. So yesterday I purchased a yard of chocolate satin from the fabric store and today I will be whipping up a shiny new pillowcase for my little Salamander and hopefully the rats nests in the back of her head will go bye bye.

Lucy And Bart

Here are a few imagines from the twisted and oh so creative brains of Lucy And Bart.
"LucyandBart is a collaboration between Lucy McRae and Bart Hess described as an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body. They share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression. Unconsciously their work touches upon these themes, however it is not their intention to communicate this. They work in a primitive and limitless way creating future human shapes, blindly discovering low – tech prosthetic ways for human enhancement."

Those are just balloons! I'm so going to try that!

A Mad Tea {Towel} Party

I received an email from Maya of Visualingual this morning. She is doing an exhibit of artist and designer created tea towels, which will be displayed at Nicholas Gallery in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio beginning in July. Now here is the funny part- I am from Cincinnati, Ohio! The Final Fridays Art Walks are all too familiar too me. I have been feeling a bit nostalgic all day now....

And here is the second kicker- I was already gearing up to make tea towels all month! I placed a rather large order with Dharma Trading Company and as soon as I find the time, I will start creating my master pieces. I find the ombre' technique to be inspiring and low and behold Martha featured it in the May Living magazine. You can find it here online for free tho.

From Maya's site- "In summer 2008, Nicholas Gallery, located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, will host an exhibit of tea towels from all over the world. Functional and non-functional entries are sought. Whether you're a designer with a line of functional tea towels, or an artist curious about pushing a mundane form in an exciting new direction, we'd love to hear from you.
The deadline for entries is 16 Jun 08. Email your entries in Jpeg format [1 Mb maximum per photo] to teatowel@gmail.com. Please be sure to answer the following questions in your email:
* name
* location
* title of work
* dimensions
* media/materials
* price

If your work is accepted, we will require the actual work by 27 Jun 08. You will have the option of sending it in or hand-delivering your work."

If you are interested in participating you should definitely read everything on the site. The pricing doesn't make sense to me, they take more commission from you the more you charge for your towel. Is that normal? It seems like it should be a flat commission.

I can't believe its 11 o'clock and I still can't seem to get motivated. I feel like I should do something creative with my day but then I look around and see a messy house that needs tending. blarg. So I just turn back and stare at the computer screen some more.

Flat Pack Slippers

Found this over at Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. If you don't know about it- Its a really sweet crafty magazine. They also feature real live artists and crafters that you see online all the time. My mother-in-law sent me a subscription to it and at first I was like wft? This is a paperdoll magazine! This is so Holly Hobbie.... Then I opened it and saw so much more. I really found it to be quite inspiring. I usuaally try to only use my "powers" for mod design but Home Companion fed into my inner crafter.
Back to the slipper. Since we moved our boat I have been trying to get my travel goodies together. The perfect travel pack. I want to be just as comfortable on the road/water as I am at home but I don't want to schlep a huge bag around. These slippers are perfect! They are totally "flat pack" and I can actually make them to fit my humongo feet. (and make matching ones for my Salamander).

Chalkboard Pegs

I think these black board pegs are really cool and totally diy-able. I have been looking for storage ideas, we are in the middle (today!) of re-doing our craft room. My husband has been ill for a few weeks so we have set up a few computers at home in my craft room so he can get some work done. We bought a whole van full of new office furniture and are building it now. I'll have pictures next week if anyone's interested.

Tisket a tasket a black and yellow basket

This weekend was our neighborhood yardsale. We didn't sell because we wanted to shop instead. We set out early with our rickety cart that we bought for a quarter 3 years ago at a rummage sale. The first house we went to I scored a huge box of craft paints and stamps for $3.00! There must be 200 bottles of paint. Most are not even opened. I set the box in my cart and started to take off when snap! A tire busted off. Good thing were were 2 houses away from home. We dropped the goods off and went to the next house where low and behold they were selling this black cart for $5.00. I decided to make a lining for it since that was something I had always wanted to do to my other cart but never did. I whipped this one up in about 2 hours last night using an old shower curtain and the curtains that I just replaced in my kid's room. Pretty cute huh? It's so 70"s chic' now. It also goes well with the yellow garden cart that we schlep the kid around when we hit the flea markets.

Ooooooo nice roomy pocket inside......

Crazy Vintage Ads

My neighbor and I were trying to figure out what was going to be the equivalent of these absurd ads by the time our kids are adults. My answer was all of the plastics that we shove in our babies mouths. Our kids will say "can you believe our parents did that to us?" Just like I say "can you believe my parents were both smoking in the delivery room and then my mom just held me on her lap when we were in the car?" What will your kids say?

TAPEWORMS?!?!

Did they really open beer cans this way? I really don't see a difference between the 2 cans?
