I love this beautiful color wheel wreath made by Denise of dSharp. A bit late for Christmas but I think this would be lovely in any seasonal color scheme.
I recently did this to a wooden bangle bracelet that I picked up at a thrift store. I wrapped various colors of embroidery thread around it at different lengths. It made a really cool statement piece! I'm also thinking about doing it to some dull napkin rings. (It's a great quiet time waster when your awake in the middle of the night for a few hours while the rest of the house is sound asleep and your house is an open floor plan. )

Do You Gocco?

This is a handy little device for the serious Gocco users out there. I say serious because it ain't exactly cheap. ($1,000-1,200 for A4 and A5 only.) It is a replacement for those costly little flash bulbs. A thermal screen printer.
"This compact direct-thermal printer uses heat to create your image on gocco-style thermal screen masters. The process allows characters and graphics to print clear and crisp. The new electronic direct-drive system means the printers are quiet and fast. With just a few moving parts, they are low-maintenance, offering years of reliable and consistent operation."

Also- many of you may have noticed that the cost of the bulbs has gone up. Instead of getting 10 bulbs for about $15, you now only get 4 for the same money. WTF? I just ordered the old boxes of 10 from
Printaddict or Etchworld. So stock up while you still can.
My husband and I are also experimenting with using a shop lamp in the upper housing, something we will have to try again once I get my replacement stage glass since we melted the original one in our "experiment". He swears that it can be done if I am willing to let him try again. We will see.... btw- has anyone ever use old camera flash bulbs for this?

Do You Yudu?

Does anyone have one of these? The Provocraft Yudu screen printing machine? I first noticed it from the Joann Fabrics newsletter but they seem to be out of them. I put in an email to the Provocraft people to see who else sells them. I'm just wondering if you do own one, how do you like it?
I know I could set up a simple silk screening station in my garage but I kinda like the idea of having a nice clean little machine to do it. Besides- after you buy all of the screens and hinges and light and dryer yadda yadda yaddda, you've spent the same amount as the Yudu.

Tufted Headboard

I really like this headboard by Lockwood Design. We happen to have lots of crappy plywood that would just love to be covered in 2 inch foam and some swanky fabric and then tufted and hung above my bed. I am not sure that Mr. Hubby will like this idea but got-dangit! I need something to soften the blows against the wall whilst in the throws of passion!
I tried to find a video on making such a headboard but had no luck. I did find several sites offering help on the matter tho... here here here and here.

Pic Pads

I know I know- all of these paper things! But I can't resist. I keep finding such cool designers and services, like Pic Pads, where you can create custom note pads.

For years Laura Eiman, founder and CEO of PicPads, has been producing custom photo notepads as gifts for family and friends. Due to their popular demand, Ms. Eiman launched PicPads as a formal business on Thanksgiving Day, 2005. PicPads received tremendous press and the product took off. To date Ms. Eiman has produced over 15,000 sets of pads. PicPads was selected as one of Rachael Ray's top 10 favorite gift products in 2007.

"I am grateful to all my customers and the media. Your enthusiasm for PicPads has empowered me to build PicPads into a successful sustainable business that gives back. I donate 2% of all net sales to Heifer International to help feed the hungry. My goal is to have a set of PicPads on every kitchen counter in America by August, 2010, and to become the next Project Red. My goal is to donate 50% of the net sales to feed the hungry. An even higher goal is to empower other women-owned businesses to reach their greatest potential and donate 50% of their net sales to the needy too. "

We Will Miss You Domino

Lat week I received a really good deal from Domino magazine offering me something like 15 years for the price of one. I told my husband that I was hesitant because all of the magazines that are going out of business and while I want to support my favorites, I am afraid that they too will go under. Low and behold- I heard thru the grapevine today that our cherished Domino is going under and March will be the last month. I wonder if they too will offer Martha Stewart in exchange for the rest of my subscription? I think I am now expecting 4 copies of it each month.....

Worlds Smallest Postal Service

From the site- "The World's Smallest Postal Service is a teeny tiny letter transcription service - now available online. Here's how it works: You write a letter (up to 120 words! - see the form below) and I transcribe it onto tiny stationary (1 x 1.5 inches) with a magical transcription device. It then goes into a tiny envelope which gets addressed, stamped, and sealed with a miniscule wax seal with your initial on it. The letter then goes into a see-through folded coin case and is packaged up with a magnifying glass in a larger glassine envelope, finished off with a large "World's Smallest Letter" wax seal. It is then put in a sturdy mailer for shipping. I can send your letter directly to a recipient of your choice, or to you if you would like to distribute it yourself."
For more information and prices go to Leafcutter Designs.

Always Check Your Childs Homework

Dear Mrs. Jones,
I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer.
I work at Home Depot and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it. Her picture doesn't show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot.
From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Smith

Splash

I spotted this over at we heart it. It looks like someone is swimming in a tank. Kinda like the polar bears at the zoo! I don't know much about it but I thought this would be such a cool art piece hanging on a wall. One could even use an underwater shot of their baby swimming. Urchin Rock does a brilliant job capturing babies swimming.
Or try it yourself with a single use waterproof camera!

Vanitas Collection

"A collection of products inspired by the Dutch "vanitas" still life paintings from the 16th and 17th century. The characteristic type of symbolic still life painting is the one where the symbols of emptiness, time and death were placed on the canvas as a reminder of the vanity of one's earthly life."

Plushie: An interactive design system for plush toys - stuff animals

Plushie is an ‘interactive system that allows non-professional users to design their own original plush toys’. The free Java program is currently at a very early stage in development, but is nevertheless fascinating.

Furthermore, an arbitrary 3D model cannot necessarily be realized as a real plush toy, and the final sewn result can be very different from the original 3D model. We avoid this mismatch by constructing appropriate 2D patterns and applying simple physical simulation to it on the fly during 3D modeling. In this way, the model on the screen is always a good approximation of the final sewn result, which makes the design process much more efficient. We use a sketching interface for 3D modeling and also provide various editing operations tailored for plush toy design.

Plushie- free Java Script program for windows only. Here.

1.16.2009

I have just spent the majority of my day placing ads on Craigslist. My husband and I have decided to use a third party logistics company to store and ship our products. So what does that mean you say? It means that we get to move out of out humongo 15,000 sq ft warehouse and into a swanky new office over looking the marina or ocean or something. That also means that we have alot of stuff to sell. Stuff that was left there when we moved in. Stuff that we have been using and stuff that we have just been storing in the loaf and back offices this whole time.
After posting them to Craigslist I then posted them to Wists so that I could make a cool little widget for my sidebar. I know it is all a bit industrial but give it a look see anyway. I will be adding many many items over the next couple of months (even some household items too).

Save Handmade Toys

Vote here now!
In 2007, large toy manufacturers who outsource their production to China and other developing countries violated the public's trust. They were selling toys containing dangerously high lead content, unsafe small parts, and chemicals that made kids sick.

The United States Congress rightly recognized that the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) lacked the authority and staffing to prevent dangerous toys from being imported into the US. So, they passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) in August 2008. Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in children's products, mandates third party testing and certification, and requires manufacturers of all goods for children under the age of 12, to permanently label each item with a date and batch number.

All of these changes will be fairly easy for large, multinational companies to comply with. Large manufacturers who make thousands of units of each item have very little incremental cost to pay for testing and updating their systems to include batch labels. Small businesses however, will likely be driven out of business by the costs of mandatory testing, to the tune of as much as $4,000 or more per item. And the few larger manufacturers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.

Anyone who produces or sells any of the following new or used items will be required to comply with the law: toys, books, clothing, art, educational supplies, materials for the learning disabled, bicycles, and more. Any uncertified item intended for children under the age of 12 will be considered contraband after February 10, 2009. It will be illegal to sell or give these items away to charities, and the government will require their destruction or permanent disposal, resulting in millions of tons of unnecessary waste, and placing an enormous strain on our landfills.

There is a clear disconnect between the sweeping nature of this law, and the narrow range of products that were problematic in 2007. The CPSIA applies standards that were put in place in reaction to the sale of toys contaminated with lead paint and toxic plastics. Rather than focus on these materials, this law places a guilty until proven innocent mentality on all children's product producers by imposing mandatory testing and certification, and in the process will kill an entire industry.

Thriving small businesses are crucial to the financial health of our nation. Let's amend the CPSIA so that all businesses large and small are able to comply and survive!
