Vintage Belt Floor Mat

I have been looking for a nice floor mat for my desk chair. I wanted to find a way to avoid that nasty plastic thing you get from office stores. And low and behold- I found this friggin awesome rug made from old belts! I know i could totally DIY this using old belts (I happen to have a ton on hand since giving birth. I don't think I will ever be a size 2 again) I think perhaps a piece of vinyl flooring and then somehow liquid nail on the belts and trim off the ends. I don't know if I could get as nice of a circle but a square would do just fine.

Nusskubus Nutcracker

"This simple nutcracker consists of two beechwood cubes with three varying hollows carved in the sides making it ideal for cracking an assortment of different-sized nuts. Simply place a nut in one of the hollows and slam the two cubes together. Included in Destination: Berlin, our limited-time product collection celebrating the city's young and dynamic design scene."

I think this is totally DIY-able. Just use some of your srap wood or even find a new piece. If you start now you could even master this and present it to your father-in-law who is sssosoooo picky at Christmas. Just a little tip on the finish tho- use a cutting board oil instead of any kind of polyurethane. It's safer for consumption.

Erasable Labels

Get organized -- again and again -- with these chalkboard drawers. The labels can be erased as contents in each drawer change: Affix masking tape in square outlines to fronts of drawers or tins; cover each square with latex chalkboard paint. Let dry, and remove tape. To add a border, place two strips of masking tape parallel to each other on opposite sides of square; paint, let dry, and remove tape. Repeat with two other sides.

I think you could also add the border by simply using a sharpee and a straight edge.

I love using chalkboard paint! This is a terrific way to add style to a boring terracotta planter all while keeping track of what you actually planted. Notice the little nubs of chalk hanging from a piece of twine.

Make Mini Bagels

Delicious Days shows us how to make these oh so sweet mini bagels. I just adore them!

1)Mix flour and salt in a large bowl and make a little depression in the middle. Then pour water and olive oil into the depression and sprinkle dry yeast on top. Cover bowl with a kitchen towel and allow to rest for about 5-10 minutes.

2)Either use your kitchen machine or knead by hand until the dough becomes smooth, shiny and elastic. Add some more flour if it feels too sticky. Again, let the covered bowl rest at a warm place for about 60-90 minutes (size of dough should have doubled by then).

3)Preheat oven to 200°C (392°F). Punch down the dough, and shape about 16 to 20 equally sized little balls. Now comes the fun part: You can either use your index finger (poke it in flour first) or the handle of a wooden spoon to create a hole in the middle and try to give each bagel a nice look. Be sure to make the holes a notch larger than you’d think is necessary, they tend to quickly close up as the bagels rise and bake.

4)Heat up a pot of saltwater and bring to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer. Send bagels into the hot water for about a minute (they’ll float on top) and remove with a skimmer. Imagine wrinkled fingers after a long hot bath - yep, that’s what they look like now.

Note: You could now brush some egg yolk over the bagels to give them a darker (and more yellow-ish) color. We tried with a few and found the original color to be much nicer looking.

5)Sprinkle with sesame, poppy seeds or other seeds/spices of your choice and bake in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Once cooled down a bit you can serve right then and there, but they also taste phenomenal the next morning, straight from the toaster with cream cheese and jam. Home-made jam of course :) Throughout last year, my family went a little overboard preserving jams and jellies (and other) - this is what we got just this Christmas… Sour cherries and blood orange are my new favorites - so far.
